Democracy and Human Rights Program

The Democracy and Human Rights Program is one of the core programs at Madarat Center for Community Development. It aims to promote a culture of democracy and protect human rights in Palestine, in line with the Center’s mission to build a free civil society that upholds the principles of citizenship and the rule of law. The program is grounded in Madarat’s belief in the vital role of youth and women in public life and its commitment to empowering them to contribute to sustainable development and social justice.

Main Focus Areas::

The program covers several key thematic areas, including good governance, civic participation, transparency, social accountability, human rights, and the empowerment of women and youth. By focusing on these areas, the program seeks to instill the values of active citizenship and strengthen the role of marginalized groups in decision-making processes.

Tools and Methodologies::

The program applies a diverse set of tools and approaches to achieve its objectives, including:

• Organizing advocacy and lobbying campaigns to defend rights and address community issues.
• Launching interactive community initiatives that foster participation and dialogue at the grassroots level.
• Forming youth monitoring teams to oversee the performance of local authorities and enhance transparency.
• Implementing capacity-building and training programs to empower youth and women and develop their leadership skills.
• Producing media and awareness materials (audio, visual, and digital) to promote democratic values and human rights principles.

Program Structure and Sub-Projects::

The Democracy and Human Rights Program serves as an umbrella framework for a range of projects and initiatives that contribute to its overall goals. Notable among these are:

• “تحالف مؤسسات راصد فلسطين“:

وهو ائتلاف وطني يضم اربع وعشرون مؤسسة مجتمع مدني من مختلف محافظات الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة، ويعمل بطريقة تعاونية وتشاركية في برامج ومشاريع وأنشطة تعزيز قيم المواطنة والمشاركة المجتمعية والمساءلة الاجتماعية ومراقبة المناسبات الانتخابية.

• Social Accountability Program:

This program focuses on monitoring the extent to which local authorities and selected government ministries fulfill their electoral promises, particularly those related to women and youth. It consists of three main components:

• Activities ofthe “Civil Youth Accountability Team”, which was established under the “RASED Palestine” Coalition project. This team is composed of 48 young members, professionally trained to organize social accountability sessions, and represents the coalition’s member organizations at the national level across all twelve governorates of the West Bank.
• Activities of Accountability on Women's Electoral Promises andAccountability on Youth Electoral Promiseso Accountability for Women’s Electoral Promises and Accountability for Youth’s Electoral Promises, which involve organizing accountability sessions and community dialogues to review the extent to which elected councils have honored their campaign promises on women’s and youth issues, and how well these align with their electoral platforms. These activities help raise transparency and strengthen public trust in the decision-making process.

Through these integrated components, the Democracy and Human Rights Program at Madarat Center strives to build an informed and engaged grassroots base and foster a democratic culture that respects rights and freedoms. This aligns with international civil society standards and best practices in community development.
